Senior Malik Tyne signs his National Letter of Intent to play Division 1 football at Towson University. Tyne played high school football for the first time this year for his senior year. He came to JC his sophomore year to play basketball and immediately made varsity.

On Feb. 4, senior Malik Tyne signed his National Letter of Intent to Towson University for football at 8:09 a.m. Tyne rushed for 381 yards and six total touchdowns during the 2014 football season, which was his first season at JC.

Tyne, a 6-foot 2-inch 220-pound running back and outside linebacker from Ontario, Canada, received a full tuition scholarship to play football at Towson University.

This year was Tyne’s first year playing high school football. Head football coach Keith Rawlings persuaded Tyne to join the team for his senior year.

“I had thought about playing football at JC since sophomore year. [Football] coach Keith [Rawlings]  asked me to play, and you know, I always wanted to so I decided I would play,” Tyne said.

Tyne had to cut his summer vacation short in order to attend football camp with the JC team in northern Pennsylvania. Tyne thrived at camp and made some relationships with coaches and players that are very important to him.

“When I went to camp with the team I really got to know a lot of the guys better and had a great time,” Tyne said.

Tyne raves about the help that Rawlings provided him with learning football and the recruiting process. “He really taught me the ins and outs of football and I’m very thankful for that,” Tyne said.

Before coming to JC, Tyne lived in Brampton, Canada, a small city in southern Ontario. He was recruited to play basketball by head coach Tony Martin. Tyne played for CIA Bounce in Canada along with JC teammates Kimbal Mackenzie and Elijah Long.

The switch to leave Brampton and come to Bel Air came during Tyne’s sophomore year. Tyne enrolled as a sophomore at JC and immediately made an impact on the men’s varsity basketball team.

Tyne, a two sport varsity athlete, had to make the choice between playing college football and college basketball this year.

Tyne will join Towson University’s football team under head coach Rob Ambrose. Towson is a Division One school that plays in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
