This year, the varsity baseball team had an in-conference record of 14-4 for the season, and junior Joey Coudon played a major role in helping the team achieve this.
Joey, the starting center fielder, had a total of 15 home runs this season, breaking the single-season record for most home runs by an individual player for JC. He also tied the single-season record for most home runs by a team against the Loyola Dons at home.
“Being able to play a part in the breaking of the single season home run record feels like an unreal experience. It is really cool how a lot of us contributed to the record,” said Joey.
For club, Joey plays for the U.S Elite National Team where he is their shortstop and second baseman.
Joey said that he had started playing baseball as soon as he could. His dad played in college, and Joey feels that the sport has been passed down to him through his family. He has learned many crucial life lessons and could not imagine life without baseball.
Joey is not a natural center fielder, “but I do it to help my team win. I do all I can to help my teammates.
“Out of this season, I’ve gotten a lot closer with the seniors. We have the most fellowship this year than we have had in any other season that I’ve been a part of the team.”
Joey feels that he could reach out to any of the seniors next year — even while they’re playing at the collegiate level.
Senior Drew Jourdan said, “Joey is an incredible person and competitor which is a huge part of his contribution to our success this year.”
Drew added that “having Joey as a teammate was truly a blessing. I enjoyed every moment on the field with him because of our similar mindsets and constant want for more and to be better. Everyone prays for a teammate like Joey, and that is why I am so grateful for the opportunity to have spent the last three years with him.”
Regarding Joey’s overall season, Head Coach Darrion Siler said, “He’s disciplined and relentless. He’s not one to miss any workouts, extra sessions, to take any reps off. He’s focused and committed to his craft. It’s very impressive.”
Coach Siler also said that Joey is very kind and accepting. “He brings people in, and he’s a great role model for the younger players; we are blessed with a great leadership group all around,” said Coach Siler.
