As the 2025 school year came to a close for seniors, so did Evan DeVoe’s impressive high school running career.
A four-year varsity runner for JC, Evan had been a steady force on the track and cross-country teams since his freshman year as he was known for his consistency and dedication.
He received recognition as MIAA Athlete of the Year, All-Conference, and the Patriot Award for cross-country.
Reflecting on his journey, Evan said, “I am definitely most proud of breaking 17 minutes in the 5K at my last cross-country championship.”
He explained that, for him, running is always about individual growth. “There will always be someone faster than you, so it is important to celebrate your personal victories.”
Evan’s perspective shows the discipline and mental resilience that define competitive distance running. His approach to the sport emphasizes long-term progress and motivation- qualities that have helped him succeed both on and off the course.
Like many athletes, Evan’s path was not without setbacks. During his junior year, he suffered an injury during spring outdoor track and field. A challenge that could have sidelined his career, Evan instead took his time recovering to return to his best.
“I was able to get through my injury by doing static stretches whenever I could, easing back into running, and just enjoying the process of regaining my fitness.”
Beyond times and medals, Evan credits cross country with shaping his high school experience. “Through the team, I found my main group of friends.”
“Joining the team also made me love running, making it a big part of who I’ve been throughout high school,” he said.
This fall, Evan will take his academic and athletic talents to Mount St. Mary’s University, where he plans to compete at the Division I level in cross-country.
His advice to runners speaks to the character he has developed throughout his journey at JC. “Progress is rarely linear. Enjoy the highs and lows of running and savor every personal best.”
