Senior Owen Gerber was a vital part of the varsity golf team during the season, not only for his skill and experience but also for the leadership and positive attitude that he brought to the team.
Owen first started golfing at the age of 12 thanks to his father’s influence. “He got me into the sport. I liked that it was something I could do for a long time.”
Over time, Owen’s love and passion for the sport has only grown stronger, especially with the help of his father to whom he has always admired to learn and grow as a golfer.
“My biggest inspiration is my dad; he inspires me because of his ability to improve and learn from previous experiences,” said Owen.
When it comes to preparing for a match, Owen has a certain routine to help him succeed and get into the right headspace. “I like to listen to country music and spend time talking to my teammates.”
In addition to his preparation, Owen’s strategy to improve is to “take a step back and watch what is happening before trying again. It helps me to understand what I am doing wrong before trying again and to reset.”
This was not the easiest season for the team in terms of scores, but overall, the team grew a lot together.
Owen’s favorite memory involving golf was the first time he beat his dad on eighteen holes.
His biggest piece of advice for underclassman is to “get involved in any sport you can. You learn competition, and it helps you to meet new people and make new friends.”
Golf has taught Owen a lot of life lessons including patience; his biggest challenge is staying consistent, but he overcomes that by keeping competition.
“What drives me to keep pushing is competition, not just with others but myself as well and wanting to become the best I can be.”
When he has time, outside of golf Owen is involved in the varsity soccer team and enjoys hanging out with his friends and fishing.
