Athletes from all over the region came together on May 7, 8, and 10 to compete in the outdoor track and field championships.
The girls’ events took place at McDonogh School on May 7 while the boys competed at Calvert Hall on May 8.
The final day of the championship brought both boys and girls together to Archbishop Spalding on May 10.
The girls track and field team won in the “B” conference while the boys’ team took fifth place overall in the “B” conference.
Coach Robert Torres said, “I was excited, especially for the ones who have been on the team for a while because this is their third straight win.”
Junior Lily Holcomb added, “Winning champs for the third outdoor season in a row makes me excited to see what more we can accomplish in the future and grateful for the health and hard work of our team.”
Besides the collective win of the team, there were some individual achievements, with certain runners on the girls outdoor field and track team making all-conference, including sophomore Emma Keane, juniors Danica Ross, Lily Holcomb, and Cali Friedel, and seniors Maddie Wassin and Izzy Grace.
Junior Alex Wohlfort and Tony Pate made the all-conference for the boys track and field team.
Junior Danica Ross commented, “After the team put in all their effort the entire season, we were very excited that we accomplished first place. On a more personal level, winning the triple jump was extremely fulfilling, considering all the hard work that was put into practice.”
Teammates rely on each other for motivation, pushing each other during races and supporting each other from the sidelines.
Sophomore Emma Keane said, “I am very thankful to have teammates who are very encouraging and cheering me on with
positive words before, during, and after my meet.”
Danica added, “Although track seems like an independent sport where you are constantly beating your personal records, we all supported one another and encouraged each other to do our best, which led to our victory at champs.”
There were some challenges this season that made things tough. Several athletes got the flu or had small injuries that kept them from competing in some meets. Even with those problems, the team stayed strong and kept pushing forward.
Senior Maddie Wassin said, “It felt pretty good winning my champs as a senior. My favorite memory was running with all my friends and making new friends through competing.”
