The theatre department has done it again—they have put on another unforgettable production. This year it is “Peter Pan.”
I had the opportunity to watch a dress rehearsal, and I was blown away.
Senior leads Kelly Vaughn (Peter Pan), Liz Johnson (Wendy Darling), Ryan Selvy (Captain Hook) and Kelsey Lake (Tiger Lily) have all clearly put in hours of time and dedication into an incredible production.
“Peter Pan” tells the story of Darling children Wendy, John and Michael, and their travels to Neverland, a place where children don’t get older. Peter Pan is the leader of the Lost Boys.
The show begins with Peter visiting the Darling children in their nursery. Peter is trying to reclaim his shadow, which he left behind when he visited the last time. Vaughn does an amazing job playing a little boy who is intent on doing whatever he can to not grow up.
In their journey through Neverland, the Darling children run into Captain Hook and the Jolly Roger crew. Captain Hook is Peter’s nemesis and apparently does his best thinking while he dances. The choreography, as always, is incredible. It is challenging choreography that the dancers pull off without a hitch. The dancers are very talented and the choreography is very professional. Selvy really becomes his character as he assumes the role of Captain Hook.
The sets were the first thing I noticed. They were constructed extremely well, down to the nitty-gritty details. All of the scenery was meticulously done and clearly took a lot of skill and patience.
Choreography is fantastic in all of the numbers—from a tango, to a tarantella, even to a tribal dance. The cast and company perform all of the numbers perfectly.
Director and choreographer, associate director of enrollment Kim Brueggemann and her assistant, guidance counselor Larry Hensley have produced yet another amazing production that is professional, and might as well be on Broadway. I was blown away by the cast, crew and company.
Everyone should go out this weekend and see “Peter Pan,” because the show is a fantastic, nostalgic, childhood dream.
Tickets are $15 dollars in the school store and the show plays this Friday at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
