Advisories fill the halls with Christmas cheer

Student Government Association sponsored annual door decorating contest

Each year, advisories go head-to-head decorating their doors for the glory of winning the door decorating contest. This year, top advisories each won a $25 gift card for a Dunkin’ breakfast.
Last Saturday was the second annual Festival of Lights, a new tradition that began last year so community members could look at all the lights and decorations at JC. This event has made the door decorating contest even more serious.
Since people were coming into the school and would see the advisory doors, each advisory had to step up their decorating game. The SGA gave out $25 Amazon gift cards to each advisory to put toward supplies.
JC had multiple special bell schedules so students could decorate their doors during advisory time. Advisories took advantage of a 40-minute advisory on November 29, and two 20-minute advisories on other dates. Advisors and students were able to decorate their doors until the end of advisory on Thursday, December 7.
After the judging took place, the Top Five winning advisories were announced in alphabetical order as DeMennato,  Lawler, Parish/Novack, Roiy/Attanasio, and Roy.
Honorable Mentions in alphabetical order went to the advisories of Blair/Torres, Geczy, Hemphill, Howe, Kirkpatrick, and Ward.
Door decorating is some students’ favorite part of the Christmas season. Most students participated in door decorating this year. For some students, it was their first-year decorating.
Freshman Tali Greco, part of the Ketchum advisory, said they decided to do a Whoville theme. “My favorite part of door decorating is getting shortened classes because of extended advisory.”
Another freshman who did door decorating for the first time this year is Lily Welling, who is part of the Kosmides advisory. Their theme was the Grinch and Whoville. Lily said, “We decorated our advisory like this because it is many people’s favorite Christmas movie.”
For other students, it is their second or third year participating in this event.  This includes sophomore Cali Friedel, a member of the Reynolds advisory.
Their theme is “Snow on the Beach.” This theme is based on a song by Taylor Swift.
Cali said, “My favorite part of decorating is the little fish. Everyone gets a fish, and we each have one with our name on it.”
For seniors, like Henry Coyner, this was their last door decorating. Over the years, they have had fun times and have made great memories.
Henry, a member of the Orndorff advisory, said their theme was “High School Musical” and added that he will miss all the fun he had decorating. “My favorite door we decorated was the year we did an igloo and got second place.”
The door decorating contest has been in place for over ten years, and it has grown in size over the years.
