While the majority of the seniors visited the National Museum of American History, four students had the opportunity to visit Arlington National Cemetery.
Initially, all students were going to experience the historic site, but due to rain, the plans were changed, and an additional museum was added to the trip itinerary instead. However, former Marine Corps veteran and Religion Teacher Thomas Vierheller brought a group of students who plan to pursue military careers to Arlington despite the weather.
Mr. Vierheller said the decision was made to continue the trip because “it’s so important. We really like to celebrate those who are committed to pursuing experience in the military.”
Senior Ryan Mullin said, “I chose to go to Arlington because it was a unique experience where I had the opportunity to learn more about our country’s history.”
The students also had the opportunity to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. At this ceremony, the group was able to honor those who have died in service by placing a John Carroll-themed wreath in front of the Tomb.
“It’s perhaps, at least in the United States, the most hallowed of grounds. It is a pretty amazing place,” Mr. Vierheller commented.
Senior Ben Shutt said, “Laying the wreath was a once-in-a-lifetime experience; the professionalism surrounding the ceremony made it feel surreal.”
To get from Pentagon City to Arlington, they utilized the Metro since they had a small group. They then caught up to the rest of the seniors at the end of the day.
“The trip was an opportunity to bond with my classmates and gave us a more comprehensive perspective of the commitment we will be making in a few short years. We are immensely grateful that the Army Honor Guard extended the opportunity to us and that our chaperones, Mrs. Géczy, Mr. Vierheller, and Ms. Webb, made this experience possible despite the inclement weather,” said senior Lauren Gallagher.
“It is always an honor to be there as a veteran,” said Mr. Vierheller, “It’s just very special. It’s never not special.”
