Seniors have officially graduated, and they have selected their colleges. Beginning on College T-Shirt Day, the girls not only wore the shirts of the colleges they will be going to, but they also painted their college mascots and logos onto their skirts.
The senior skirt decorations started in 2023 when the Student Government Association made a proposal for the girls to paint their college choices on their skirts.
They got approval, and since then, it has become a tradition for showing off college pride.
Assistant Principal Jake Hollin said, “I think it’s really cool to be able to see and share where they’re going and that people are very respectful and make their skirts look very professional and nice.”
Some seniors were very creative with designing and painting their skirts while some kept it simple. People put borders of their college colors around the edge; some included polka dots, and some just included the mascot or college’s name.
Claire Moffitt who will be attending UMBC in the fall said, “I cut out my symbol and mascot from a t-shirt and glued it on my skirt. I did mine very last minute, so I kept it simple.”
Alayna McCubbin who will be attending Salisbury University said, “For my skirt, I printed out a stencil of my mascot and painted it on my skirt.”
While some people did it at home by themselves at the last minute, others did it with friends, enjoying another senior activity before they go separate ways.
Addy Chalmers who will be attending Florida Atlantic University said, “Decorating my senior skirt with my friends was fun, and it made me reflect that I’m going to miss them so much when we go to different schools, but seeing them happy and proud to paint their college on their skirt makes me so happy for them.”
Decorating skirts and wearing their college t-shirts brought the class one step closer to graduation.
Victoria Heid who will also be attending Salisbury University explained, “Painting my skirt was very emotional as I was envisioning my future and reflecting on my high school experience. As I was painting my skirt, it solidified that I am really going to Salisbury in only three months.”
