College reviews: New York University
Members of The Patriot travel across the country in search of the perfect college for themselves and for readers closer to home
Campus:
Located in the heart of the lively Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village, New York University has a unique campus. It is not your typical college campus, it is truly immersed in the city.
Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin, NYU accepts 35 percent of applicants who apply with nearly 25,000 undergraduate students enrolled.
The campus is centered around the beautiful Washington Square Park. The park is almost like the quad of the campus filled with benches, grass areas, a huge water fountain that you can actually walk in, and of course, the beautiful Washington Arch. The park is huge with plenty of space to meet up with friends or to enjoy the weather when it is warm outside.
Even though the campus is in a big city, the buildings are all close to each other, making it easy to navigate your way through campus. While walking through campus, I still felt a great sense of community. The buildings are all beautiful and updated with great views of the city.
The neighborhood of Greenwich Village is one of my favorite neighborhoods in New York City. It is filled with countless restaurants and nightlife. But if you ever want to leave the Village, any part of New York City is easily accessible either by subway, taxi, or walking.
Cost:
NYU is a private university, and that comes with a price. In-state and out-of-state costs are the same, and it is about $70,000 a year including room and board. Financial aid is available and last year 97 percent of freshmen who needed financial aid, received it according to www.collegeboard.com.
Athletics:
NYU, home of the Violets, is a Division III school. Athletics are not prevalent on campus, but they are available. The most popular Division III sport is men’s basketball. Intramural and club sports are offered in almost every sport.
Food and other things to do:
NYU offers a huge variety of food. The dining halls accommodate any appetite. If dining hall food isn’t what you want, numerous restaurants around Greenwich Village take NYU dining points so you will never get bored with food. If that isn’t good enough, Manhattan has some of the best food available. The food options are endless at NYU.
At NYU, you will never get bored. Between all of the social opportunities to take part in on campus and all of the opportunities to get involved with in New York City, you’ll never run out of things to do. Whether you would rather see a concert at Madison Square Garden or have a movie night with friends in your dorm, opportunities are there. NYU has over 300 student clubs and organizations, making it easy to get involved on campus.
While walking around campus, I felt like I was on a college campus but at the same time it was different than other schools I have visited. NYU is in a popular area and besides NYU students, there will be a ton of other people walking the streets on the campus. I never thought that the campus was overcrowded to the point where I was overwhelmed but there are a lot more people walking through campus than anywhere else.
Academics:
The academic curriculum at NYU is challenging, and the average unweighted GPA of students admitted this year was 3.75. Average SAT scores are around a 610-630 in each section and ACT scores average at around a 29.
Summary:
I absolutely loved NYU. NYU has everything that I want in a school. It combines big-city living with a large student body and campus. Plus, it is located in my favorite place in the world, New York City. To love this school, you have to have an appreciation for the city and have to enjoy living in the city. The school is not for everyone but, for those craving a big city, look no further than NYU.
