Season Wrap-up: Spring Sports

May 22, 2014

To wrap up the season, coaches and athletes summarize their season’s successes and failures and look forward to next year.

Baseball

Varsity baseball closed off the season with a losing record of 6-14. JV had a losing record of 3-10.

“Overall it was a disappointing season. We struggled [to stay] healthy and had many major injuries that set us back,” varsity coach Steve Teter said.

The team didn’t make it to the championships.

“We had a lot of talent and the ability to make the playoffs, but we didn’t pull it together as a team,” varsity pitcher junior Steven Jernigan said.

The captains were seniors Connor Reeves and Mark Michael, who were both three-year players.

Reeves tore his ACL and was out for the majority of the season. Senior Nicholas Flayhart was set to be the team’s leading pitcher, but he couldn’t play the entire season because of a major arm injury.

According to Teter, “We are going to continue to work. We have a good freshman class coming in and talented kids on JV. As disappointing as it was this year, I think the future is still bright.”

Tennis

Men’s tennis finished this season with a record of 0-10. The championships were held on May 19 and 20. On both days, the players were defeated by their opponents.

“I thought that this year’s tennis season was tough,” singles player Brady Forthman, a junior, said. “We lost several good players from last year, and the matches were more competitive.”

Doubles player Brendan Wille, also a junior, agrees with Forthman. “The season this year was really great, and although we didn’t do as well as in past years, the team had an exciting and challenging time playing many new teams that moved into our conference.”

According to Wille, the team will “come back and start the season with energy and enthusiasm and just kill it.”

Badminton

The varsity women’s badminton team went undefeated with a record of 8-0. The JV team record was 4-4.

“We participated in the IAAM B conference and came out on top,” badminton coach Tess Gauthier said, regarding varsity’s undefeated season.

Members of the team also won the tournament championship on April 30. Seniors Bethany Boniface and Fiona van der Steur took the doubles championship. They played against a team from Saint Tim’s and won first place. According to Gauthier, they never lost a match this season.

“The best part of the season was hanging out with the team, and we all became very close,” varsity singles player sophomore Katie Sullivan said.

“I think that our singles players will be stronger, and I am hopeful for next season,” Gauthier said. “We are going to have to try a little harder because we will be losing seven varsity players.”

Golf

The golf team finished its season with a record of 2-7.

“We had a lot of team unity,” coach Tony Del Puppo said. “It was all friendly competition.”

The team’s final match took place on May 7, in which it lost to Archbishop Curley by just one point. “[Winning] would have put us in the playoffs,” Del Puppo said.

“The player who won us the most points is [senior] Brian Matejevich,” Del Puppo said. According to Del Puppo, Matejevich “contributed the most” and “won a lot of points” for the team.

“The seniors did really well,” freshman golfer William Molali said. “Their presence will be missed.”

According to Del Puppo, the team’s greatest weakness of the year was in closing out their matches. Many of the games lost by JC were lost in the last few holes. Additionally, “putting was a weakness.”

Del Puppo still holds a positive outlook for next year’s team. “I think we can win the B Conference title.”
