Best and worst dressed at People’s Choice Awards

January 20, 2017

On Jan. 18, the People’s Choice Awards was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Calif. Perspectives Editor Adriana Guidi and News Editor Elizabeth Harmison chose their top five best and worst looks from the night.

Adriana’s top picks

Best: Blake Lively – As always, Blake Lively rocks the red carpet. I love how the dress is see-through in certain spots but in a modest way. The bedazzled fringe looks trendy and combined with the sheer fabric, it looks fantastic. The black color of the dress and sleek straight hair add a classy element to the overall look.

Chelsea Kane – This dress is beautiful to look at. It is simple, yet exciting at the same time. The floral pattern and lace are subtle and add to the exciting flair to the dress. The structure of the dress, with its long sleeves, gives the dress  an elegant look. Overall, this dress takes a twist on a simple lace dress.

Priyanka Chopra – This dress is unlike anything I’ve never seen before. The large ruffle at the top serves as a frame for the dress is an innovative way to structure the dress. Then, under the ruffle is the exciting part, the fringe. I think it adds a fun element to the dress. The color of the dress is stunning as well and looks great with her skin tone.

Cheryl Burke – Cheryl Burke made a statement on the red carpet with this dress. The dress has a vampy edge to it, but at the same time a certain level of simplicity. My favorite part of the dress is the skirt. It uses a beautiful tulle material that falls nicely and makes it looks effortless. The top of the dress is nice too – you can never go wrong with lace! The choker, hair style, and red lipstick complete the look.

Victoria Justice – Victoria Justice’s dress was visible from a mile away, thanks to all the strands of beads. The beads suit the dress and create a distinctive pattern on their own without printed colors. The dress is sassy, fun, and definitely red carpet worthy.

Worst: Ashley Greene –  Someone call Limited Too” because Ashley Greene stole this dress from the store. This dress just looks gross. Its color and the sequins were not a good idea. The sequins covering the dress look tacky, and then combining it with this shade of purple, makes it look childish. This dress reminds me of something that someone would wear in the 2000s, which, let me remind you, was the worst time period in fashion.

Jodie Sweetin – I do not even know where to begin with this outfit. First off, the leather jacket was a horrible idea. Secondly, the pattern of the dress was terrible and looked like something you would find at Forever 21. This whole look appeared cheap and looked like something a 7-year-old would wear because they thought it was “cool.”

Jennifer Lopez – This dress looks like something someone would wear to prom, not a red carpet event. Even if someone did wear this to prom, it would still look bad. The top of this dress is my main issue. The bejeweled sheer part of the dress just looks random and awkwardly placed, and the ruching in the shoulders looks terrible. It gives me a vintage feel, but in the worse way possible.

Yara Shahidi – This dress is an epic fail for one reason – the pattern. I love the sheer material of the dress and I don’t even mind the little ruffles going down the arms and the front of the dress, but I cannot look past the pattern. It is ugly and is so in-your-face that you can’t even look at the structure of the dress and appreciate it. I think this dress would have been much better in a single color or a simpler pattern.

Keltie Knight – Normally I am a huge fan of velvet, but this dress did it all wrong. The slit makes the dress appear bunchy and look bad. This is exactly how velvet should not look. The top of the dress is not much better because it looks like two triangles were just taped to the top to make it look trendier. This dress was trying too hard.

Elizabeth’s top picks

Best: Priyanka Chopra – This nude pink dress perfectly complimented Chopra’s skin tone, and even though it was simple, it was still visually appealing. The cascading ruffle on the top part of the dress and the fringe on the bottom created interesting depth and contrasting textures. Instead of layering on jewelry, Chopra wore silver heels to add a pop of shine to the look.

Blake Lively – Lively’s outfit seemed to draw inspiration from 1920s flapper girls with this sparkly, black fringe dress. This dress was a stark contrast with what Lively normally wears, and was edgier and shorter than her usual princess ball gowns. The look was pulled together with a simple black clutch and strappy stilettos. By keeping her hair and makeup simple, Lively helped this outfit come together.

Keltie Knight – One of the biggest trends in fashion at the moment is crushed velvet, which was Knight’s fabric of choice. This way that this choice of fabric was draped helped to create drama in the dress. Darker eye makeup with a touch of teal, made Knight’s eyes stand out, and the simple hair and minimal jewelry made this look effortless.

Jamie Chung – Chung looked like she had just stepped off the jet from some tropical vacation in this lacy yellow number. Her dewy makeup and beach waves paired with the tastefully cut-out dress and strappy sandals contributed to the “surfer girl” look. The marbled teal clutch also added a hint of color to the outfit.

Chelsea Kane – The rose pattern paired with the black, lacy fabric made Kane look like a forest enchantress. Although Kane was relatively covered up, the sheer nature of the fabric helped to prevent the look from becoming too heavy. Kane broke up the darkness of the dress with subtle touches of red, and the bob cut and bangs perfectly framed her face, without drawing too much attention.

Worst: Chandra Wilson – Let me start this out by saying I love Wilson, but this look is just atrocious. The black and brown trench coat/vest thing paired with the pops of teal totally clashed. It looked like Wilson went into Goodwill 10 minutes before she had to be on the red carpet, closed her eyes, and just put on the first few things she touched.

Chris Sullivan – Honestly, what was happening with this outfit? It looked like he was heading to the Kid’s Choice Awards instead of the People’s Choice Awards. Not only was Sullivan wearing a snapback hat and the most horrendous neon, splatter paint pants, but also a pair of New Balance sneakers that a suburban dad would wear.

Sarah Drew – This dress looks as though Drew went fishing and got tangled in some fishing net before arriving on the People’s Choice Awards red carpet. If it wasn’t for the tattered lace over top of the dress, it would have been cute, but the frayed bottom just ruins the whole look.

Lori Loughlin – Loughlin looked like she went to someone’s grandmother’s house, stole her drapes and pink tablecloth, and then turned it into a dress. This blocky mess was totally unflattering and hid her figure. As far as accessories go, it looked like she tied a red and green Christmas ribbon around her neck, and her shoes looked like they would be a part of a children’s dress up kit.

Kristen Bell – The usually fabulous Bell looked like a strange mix between a disco ball and a knight’s chainlink armour in this strapless jumpsuit. The busy material of the dress coupled with the strange patches of white fabric just muddled a look that would have otherwise been wonderful if it was a single color and fabric.
