‘Let it Snow’ provides a good read this winter

‘Let it Snow’ is a collection of short stories written by John Green, Lauren Myracle, and Maureen Johnson. The book features three short stories that connect with each other, all taking place on Christmas Eve.

The novel is the perfect light, heartwarming, and funny read for Christmas break and is sure to get you excited for the holiday.
The first story is called “The Jubilee Express.” It follows Jubilee Dougal who has to spend Christmas in Florida with her grandparents instead of in Virginia with her boyfriend, Noah. When her train to Florida gets stuck in a snowstorm and leaves her alone on Christmas Eve in an unfamiliar town, Jubilee meets Stuart, who invites her to celebrate Christmas Eve with his family.
Both Stuart and Jubilee have been in toxic relationships, Stuart having just been cheated on, and Jubilee who has not been able to contact her boyfriend all night. When Jubilee and Stuart talk about their past relationships, Jubilee realizes that Noah is not someone she wants to be with and breaks up with him.
She and Stuart kiss, and the story ends with Jubilee throwing her phone into the snow to ignore the calls from Noah.
The second story is called, “A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle.” This story follows Tobin and his friends the Duke (Angie) and JP who are invited by their friend Keun to come to the Waffle House that Keun works at for a game of Twister. Tobin and JP are immediately on board after hearing that there is a group of cheerleaders at the Waffle House, but the Duke thinks that it will be a waste of time.
On the way to the restaurant, the trio faces many obstacles, including a car crash and a fight. When they finally arrive at Waffle House, the two boys begin talking to the cheerleaders and having fun. When Tobin notices that the Duke is gone, he goes outside to find her sitting on the curb, upset.
The Duke confronts Tobin about how he acts completely differently around the cheerleaders and how he treats her differently from other girls they know, just because she is a tomboy. Tobin confesses that he has feelings for the Duke, and the two apologize and kiss.
The third and final story is titled, “The Patron Saint of Pigs.” This story features Addie and Jeb, a character who has popped up in the background of the other two stories. Addie has just broken up with Jeb after a relationship of fighting that had ended with her cheating on him.
As an attempt to comfort herself after the breakup, Addie invites her friends over. Instead of comforting her, Addie’s friends tell her that she can be self-absorbed at times. As an attempt to prove them wrong, Addie decides that she will go to pick up the teacup pig that her friend Tegan has adopted, so Tegan doesn’t have to.
The next day, Addie forgets about the pig while at work, which results in it being adopted by someone else. Still convinced that she can prove her friends wrong about her vanity, Addie finds the woman who adopted the pig, only to find out that it was a woman who she had talked to earlier about how people who are wrapped up in themselves often forget to do important things.
The woman claims to have adopted the pig to teach Addie a lesson and gives the pig to her. When Addie returns to work, the previous couples of the books, Stuart and Jubilee and Tobin and the Duke are there and tell her that Jeb has been looking for her.
Jeb arrives at the Starbucks that Addie works at and tells her the story of how while looking for Addie, he saw Jubilee on the train, and later met Tobin at the Waffle House. Addie finds comfort in how Jeb brought together two different couples while trying to save his own relationship. The story ends with Jeb and Addie kissing, just as the other two ended.
Let it Snow is a great wintery read for when you want something cute and light hearted.
The novel was made into a movie for Netflix in 2019, and I also recommend the movie if you’re looking for something to watch in the upcoming holiday season. The book is a little cheesy, but was entertaining and funny.
