Movie tells the story of modern families

When Jack returns home from his first year at college to spend one final weekend with his family’s elderly dog, Stella, before she gets put down, the last thing he expects is for him and his younger brother to both fall in love with the same girl and the drama that ensues.

Stella’s Last Weekend is a 2018 romcom starring Nat and Alex Wolff. The movie is free to watch on Tubi and is a perfect movie for when you are in need of a heartwarming story of family, relationships, and pets.
Jack and Oliver are brothers raised by their single and carefree mother, Sally. Despite the brothers’ close relationship, Jack has a slight resentment and sense of competition towards the different opportunities Oliver has been given throughout his teenage years. Oliver is a candidate for a scholarship at the Ivy League college Jack had dreamed of attending, and Oliver plans on attending a study abroad opportunity that Jack had wanted to go on but knew his mom couldn’t afford at the time.
When Jack sees Violet standing across from him at the train station, he recognizes her as the girl he developed an intense crush on and was later ghosted by after meeting her at a party a few years prior. He is shocked when he returns home, and Oliver announces that he has a new girlfriend and introduces the family to Violet. Both Violet and Jack decide to pretend that they have never met before, so as to not upset Oliver.
Over the course of the next days, Violet and Jack both begin to fall for each other while Oliver is unaware of the situation and falls more in love with Violet himself. The love triangle concludes when Oliver finds out the truth and refuses to talk to Jack afterwards.
While all of their relationship drama is occurring, Sally is attempting to warm Jack and Oliver up to her new boyfriend, Ron, who the boys relentlessly mock. The family is also trying to accept that the dog they’ve had their entire life will be passing away at the end of the weekend.
The drama reaches its peak at the family’s “Farewell, Stella” party where they plan to celebrate the dog’s life with her before putting her down at the end of the party.
This movie tells an important and heartwarming story about family, sibling rivalry, loss, and love. The ending of Stella’s Last Weekend is tear jerking and sweet at the same time.
One of my favorite things about Stella’s Last Weekend is how authentic the family’s relationship is. In fact, Polly Draper, the woman who plays Sally and directed/wrote the movie, is the real life mother of Nat and Alex Wolff, the actors who play Jack and Oliver. Watching Stella’s Last Weekend does not feel like watching a movie, but instead like you are just watching a family interact.
