Looking forward to JC’s stage production, but not a fan of the movie itself

Brooke Carroll, Staff Writer

I am going to start by saying that I have nothing against the storyline or production of Elf. In fact, I am looking forward to seeing John Carroll’s production of the show in November.

However, Elf, the movie itself, is probably one of the most overrated Christmas movies even though the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 79%.

I think there’s one reason that I’m not a huge fan: Will Farrell. I know that people love Will Farrell and his portrayal of Buddy the Elf, but I am not one of them.

Elf is a 2003 movie based on how Baby Buddy accidentally is transported to the North Pole and lives his life in the North Pole with Santa. Buddy grows up thinking he too is an elf. Buddy finds out he is adopted and decides to go meet his family in New York City.

I am good with the storyline. It’s actually pretty cute, but Farrell as Buddy is just annoying.

The movie was first filmed in December 2002 and then later released on November 7, 2003. It immediately became a classic and has been shown year after year along with other classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone.

It has even been said that Farrell was offered a considerable amount of money to film a sequel, but he turned it down. I don’t want to see him in the role again.

I appreciate the theme of the movie surrounding the idea of “finding your place in the world where you belong.” I like the story behind it, and I like what the movie stands for.
However, he main reason I am not a fan is Farrell’s portrayal, but I am sure that the JC production will make me much happier to see Buddy the Elf.
