An in-depth ranking of Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ album

In August, Taylor Swift announced her new album ‘Midnights.’ Ten days ago, the album was released at midnight on October 21. Check out the rankings of all of the songs.

The original album includes 13 songs. However, Taylor Swift released an alternate version of the album with seven additional tracks she called her “3 am Tracks.” She also released a Target exclusive version with an additional song called “Hits Different” and remixes of tracks on the original album titled “Sweet Nothing” and “You’re on Your Own Kid.”

After listening to the album in full, I developed a numerical ranking for the tracks. However, in this ranking, I only include the original 12 tracks from the Midnights album, not including one of the songs due to its profane name.

My ranking for the songs kept three criteria in mind: Melody and Beat, Lyricism, and Artistry.
Starting at the bottom, my 12th rated song is “Sweet Nothing.” While this track is beautifully written, I find the melody slightly annoying and find that, in comparison to other tracks, the song is lacking in creativity.

Next, in Number 11 is “Question…?” While this song is also beautifully written, and lyrics such as “You painted all my nights a color I have searched for since” are incredibly creative and inspiring, I found myself not loving the beat and melody of this song. Other songs on the album are very catchy and have a great vibe to them, but “Question…?” is not one of these.

In Number 10 is “Snow on the Beach Ft. Lana Del Ray.” This song has such creative similes and metaphors, but in comparison to other tracks on the album, it is not very memorable.
“Labyrinth” comes in the Number 9 spot. The melody and overall calming energy behind this song is incredible. However, like “Snow on the Beach,” it doesn’t stand out to me as much as other songs lyric-wise.

Next is “Mastermind” in the Number 8 spot. Most of the lyrics in this song are plays on words which mention ideas of intelligence. For example, there is“Checkmate, I couldn’t lose.” The interesting lyricism in this song gave it its spot on this list. However, the melody is a bit too similar to other songs Swift has released previously for it to have a higher spot.

In Number 7 is “Bejeweled.” The metaphors and melody of this song are both very creative. I can see myself enjoying the catchy melody and dancing to the song at a party. However, I can also see the upbeat melody getting annoying after a few listens.

Number 6 holds the spot of “Anti-Hero.” This song is beautifully deep and dives into the insecurities of Swift that fans have never seen before. It is relatable lyric-wise and catchy to listen to. The reason for this song’s slightly lower ranking is due to its strange melody that can seem annoying at times.

“Maroon” is the song in Number 5. This song has such a catchy beat, and I love how Swift ties every lyric together in the song. However, it is not one of the songs I click on every time I want to listen to the “Midnights” album.

Next is “You’re on Your Own Kid” in the Number 4 slot. I love the message and lyricism behind this song. The bridge of the song is phenomenal and heartbreaking to listen to. It is relatable and sad, giving fans an outlet for times when they feel alone.

Next is “Karma” in the Number 3 spot. After discussing this song with my friends, it is a fan favorite. “Karma” has one of the most interesting and upbeat melodies on the album. Its lyrics are comedic and creative, and Swift uses similes perfectly to create a masterpiece.

In the Number 2 spot is “Midnight Rain.” I have heard many people give this song backlash for its strange introduction with Swift’s voice being distorted. However, I find this one of its most intriguing aspects. Swift has been known to play around with music and sound effects in past albums, but the introduction of this song is something she has never done before. The melody is also very catchy, and Swift once again tells an entire story through a three-minute long song.

Finally, the lyricism in this song is some of my favorite, and it is extremely fun to sing to.

Finally, in the Number 1 spot is “Lavender Haze.” Both number one on the album and on this list, the song has entrancing lyrics and a smooth melody that listeners can’t deny. I also love how this song focuses on romance and being so in love with someone that you feel entranced by them. “Lavender Haze” is reminiscent of both “Lover” and “Reputation” mixed together, and I ranked it highly as soon as I listened to it.

If you ever need a new album to listen to when you’re driving or doing your homework, take a trip over to Spotify and give Midnights a listen.
