Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a Netflix original, was released on September 21 and quickly rose to number one.

The ten-episode series follows the life of American serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, who is played by Evan Peters.

The format of the show is one that is not often seen in film as it starts with Dahmer’s capture and then jumps around to different points of his life.
Although Ryan Murphy did an amazing job directing the show, I really didn’t like some aspects of it.

I realize the things Dahmer did were horrible and gruesome, but while watching, I found myself feeling really unsettled. There were times where I had to close my eyes or look away, and there were even a few times where I had to turn the show off altogether.

Another aspect of the show that I didn’t like was that, at times, I found myself feeling bad for Dahmer. I felt sympathy for him when I was watching scenes from his earlier years specifically, and that was a feeling that didn’t sit right with me.

Dahmer covers parts of his life like his parents’ divorce and the killing of his victims, but it also covers his trial, his time in jail, and how the victims’ families were affected. Unique to the show, viewers can see backstory into the lives of many of the victims and their families, and I was really able to get a feel for how these people were affected. I believe it’s important to mention the victims, so they don’t get swept away and forgotten by the popularity of the show.

The directors and producers did a very good job of telling the clean-cut version of the story. They didn’t sugarcoat or exaggerate anything, and it’s one of the most accurate serial killer shows I’ve watched. Although it was disturbing, and I wouldn’t watch it again, I would recommend it.
