This cheesy 90’s rom-com is the perfect movie for one.

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we think of love, romance, and relationships. However, some people are not in a relationship, and may not be feeling in the “Valentine’s Day mood.” 

10 Things I Hate About You can pull you right out of that crummy mood. This 1999 romantic-comedy has it all: teenage love, sarcastic jokes, and amazing music. The film stars many 90s icons like Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, and Andrew Keegan.

The movie begins as Bianca Stratford, played by Oleynik, asks her father if she can go out with Joey Donner, a super-popular senior. Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles, scoffs at this idea. Her father has one strict rule: No dating until Kat starts dating. Unfortunately for Bianca, Kat is one of the rudest girls at school. No one wants to date her.

The new kid in town, Cameron James, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, quickly lays eyes on Bianca. However, he knows that she cannot go out with him until Kat starts dating. He finds a very rebellious student, Patrick, played by Heath Ledger, to go out with Kat.

Cameron needs to find a way to get Patrick to date Kat. Cameron convinces Joey to bribe Patrick to go out with Kat. The only problem is, Joey also wants to go out with Bianca. Patrick agrees to the bribe, and everything unfolds from there.

Is Kat and Patrick’s relationship real or just a stunt? Will Cameron win over Bianca’s heart? Watch the film to find out!

This movie has a lot of plotlines, so it is impossible to be bored. The characters are all so unique and bring many different elements to the movie. Kat is the strong feminist; Bianca is the boy-obsessed younger sister; Patrick is the mysterious senior who no one really knows, and Cameron is the shy new student who has eyes for only one girl.

The soundtrack to the movie screams 90s. It features many hits like, “Cruel to Be Kind” by Letters to Cleo and “Hypnotize” by The Notorious B.I.G. These songs will take you for a trip back in time.
