Blue coloring threatens Spirit Week

After Class Color Day was reinstated by the administration, blue coloring outside of room 222, on the door in the main staircase, and outside of the maintenance room put the “festivities for the week in jeopardy,” according to Principal Paul Barker.

“Fortunately” the color was probably a result of blue hairspray, said Mike Ustaszewski ’72, of maintenance.

Barker could not be reached for comment, but made his points in an announcement to the entire school.

Barker said, “We made it crystal clear that there was to be no more paint. And further vandalism will be subject to significant disciplinary action.”

Dean of Students Thomas Vierheller announced on Tuesday that the person who vandalized the hallway was caught, although their identity was kept confidential.

In addition, the administration is working to crack down on “tagging,” or using duct tape or paint to mark students of different grade levels with another class’s colors, predominantly blue and green for juniors and seniors.

“Any object that involves intimidating or touching other students” will cause the perpetrator to “be subject to significant disciplinary action,” Barker said.

Students had strong reactions to the possibility of a changing Spirit Week.

“If I don’t have Spirit Week next year, I’m still going to do it, so it doesn’t really affect me,” junior Kyle Sorensen said, To the students responsible for the hairspray, he said, “Wait a year before you screw things up so that I can enjoy Spirit Week.”

“I think they should continue Spirit Week. If the faculty were students, would they want their Spirit Week cancelled?” said sophomore Imani Love. She added, “Why did they do that? Are they getting an award? What’s the point of doing it, nobody cares. If you brag to people, somebody’s going to snitch.”

However, Love looks at the incident as unimportant in the grand scheme of things. “Can they clean it up? I think they should bring back the paint – its more spirit. If you take away all the elements of Spirit Week, it will be boring,” Love said.

Ustaszewski offered this suggestion to the students: “Have a lot of fun this Spirit Week, but keep it clean.”

Vice Principal of Academics Gary Scholl could not be reached for comment. Vierheller had no comment because of disciplinary action being processed.
