Athletics launches JC sports radio station

At the beginning of October, JC students heard an unfamiliar sound coming from the scoreboard. This sound was a recording of a man who talked about the game and that the recording was part of “The John Carroll Sports Radio Station.”

The radio station provided fans with information about the opposing team, the team’s  record, and the guidelines and rules for the people attending. Additionally, pregame music was included.

Since the beginning of fall sports, JC teams have been trying to figure out what qualifies as valid pregame music.

The JC athletics staff has been working hard to make sure that every team’s playlist meets the standards of the school, but that has caused a lot of controversy between teams.

The final solution, made by the athletic department, was to create a radio station that would play JC-approved music for every team to use before their games.

“I believe the radio station is a great opportunity and represents proper branding and professionalism for an athletic event,” Assistant Athletic Director Brian King said.

The station will start two hours before the start of each game.

The radio station is diverse and seems to be working for each team so far, but change is always difficult, and there are a lot of questions as far as the radio station’s future here at JC.

Students wonder if this only for fall sports or if student athletes will ever get a say in the music.

“We’re just scratching the surface. Programs such as the ACC and B1G use this, and we look to build upon what we’ve already started here,” Mr. King said.

Pregame music has not been a big issue with JC sports until this school year. To prevent further disputes and complaints, the JC athletics staff had to invest in a system that would benefit everybody.

Teams have been working to make clean playlists for the station, meeting required guidelines for the broadcast.

“The radio station really opens up revenue that wasn’t there before, and we want to keep it going for a while,” Mr. King said.
